Class review for ADV 483

 Written by: Elizabeth Anderson

Hello, fellow advertising students! Are you approaching your senior year and wondering what the core classes are like? I am currently in advertising 483: Audience Analysis and can tell you all you need to know.

So, let’s start with the basics. First off, attendance is not required. While you may think “Great! I'll never have to go to this class.”, think again. The Professor does not share lecture notes on the course page. So, if you miss a class you won’t get any of the notes. This class has a good amount of math, and the basics of analyzing audiences can get pretty confusing. However, attend class and pay attention and you will be just fine.

The discussion questions are relatively straightforward, and the same goes for the knowledge blasts. Participation exercises start off straightforward as well but get more difficult once you get to math and data analysis. The Professor always has office hours though and can help you figure them out if you are struggling. The individual and team assignments are more work, but allow you to collaborate with your classmates and get a better understanding of course topics and lectures. The great part of this class is that there’s no midterm or final - just 3 quizzes. The quizzes are all open book and open note so if you take good notes and attend class, you should be in the clear as you would in any class.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class and was able to get a better understanding of research programs such as ComScore and really take a closer look at the backbone behind advertising. Even though this a required course within the advertising major, I am very grateful to take this class as it helped me feel better prepared for when I graduate and enter the advertising field.

TIP: Find a friend or multiple friends to create a study group before the exam. This way, you can make sure you are prepared and on the same page as your peers.
