ADV 410: Public Relations Strategies

Haleigh Fobbe

In two weeks, my first semester of junior year will come to an end. Then, I’ll only have three more semesters left of college—where has the time gone? While I only have three semesters left, many students still have a lot of courses to take and much to learn. Luckily, you have time. Looking ahead at my schedule, I see many advertising and public relations courses that I’m very excited about. If you haven’t guessed it already I am a member of the College of Media’s Advertising program, and I’m minoring in Public Relations.

Since you’re here on this page, reading my article, you must already be interested in advertising. But maybe you aren’t as well-informed about the topic of public relations. I was first an advertising major. Then, I discovered the public relations minor which lead me to one of my favorite classes, ADV 410: Public Relations Strategies. It is a three credit hour course, which looks at the strategies and communication tactics used by organizations to achieve reputation and relationship goals, taking into account various stakeholders, like journalists, consumers, and investors.

I believe advertising and public relations complement each other very well, and through my courses, I’ve seen a large overlap between the two. Advertising 410 is informative and hands-on. I feel like this class has sufficiently prepared me for when I obtain a professional public relations position.

Professor Allison Vance teaches the course. Allison is a Content Strategy Director here at the university and because of that, she knows realistic situations that may abrupt in public relations and she teaches us thoroughly how to resolve these issues. With the help of Allison’s lectures and the guest speakers she’s invited to speak with the class, I’ve grown so much this semester. I believe I’m very much more prepared and understanding of public relations thanks to ADV 410.
