Minors for Advertising Majors

Veronica Potyrala

Now that you’ve chosen advertising, you might be thinking, “what’s next?” Advertising as a major is pretty broad, so minors are a good way to focus on specifics or just learn about something you’re interested in. If you’re considering pursuing a minor but don’t know where to start, here is a list of common minors for students in advertising.

Art + Design

The art and design minor is completed through the College of Fine and Applied Arts. It requires 18 credit hours to complete and has an application process as well as course prerequisites. This minor is great for students who want to learn design skills, such as photography and other forms of media. These are especially useful skills for students who are interested in pursuing a more creative direction in advertising.

Business

The business minor is completed through the Gies College of Business, and it is designed to be completed within three academic years. It consists of courses in accounting, finance, and business administration. This minor is great for students who would like more of a background in business or are considering working in the corporate side of the industry.

Communication

The communication minor is completed through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It requires a total of 19 hours to complete. This minor is great for students who are interested in various forms of communication and how it affects the world. It also helps develop skills, such as writing and public speaking.

Psychology

The psychology minor is completed through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It requires 18 to 19 credit hours to complete. This minor is great for students who are interested more in the consumer behavior aspect of advertising.

Public Relations

The public relations minor is completed through the College of Media. It requires 18 to 19 credit hours to complete. The minor includes courses in advertising, communication, and journalism. This minor is great for students interested in entering the field of public relations or learning more about how companies communicate with their audiences and the role of media.

Ultimately, remember that whatever minor you choose is based on your interests, and you don’t have to limit yourself to this list. Choose something that you’re genuinely interested in and makes you excited to learn, even if it’s not related to your major!
