Advertising + CS Major

Victoria Anderson

If you are currently majoring in Advertising or are thinking about having a computer science background, the Advertising + CS major might be the perfect fit for you. Offered within the College of Media, this relatively new major offers a unique opportunity into both the creative and technological fields. According to the Grainger College of Engineering, “CS + Advertising allows students to develop computational skills to apply to the arts of persuasion and ad targeting and placement in order to understand, execute, and analyze modern advertising.”

However, be prepared for a heavy workload. This major not only requires all of the core advertising credits but also requires nine computer science courses, four calculus related math courses, as well as general education requirements. So, you may be wondering, what is the benefit of this difficult major? To answer this question, computer science is very important in this day and age and also is in high demand. Many employers yearn for graduating students with a background in computer science, and in the advertising industry, these skills can be very hard to find among executives. So not only will you have the skills employers are looking for, but you will stand out amongst others in advertising and most likely be considered first before other applicants during interviews.

If you don’t know if this major is right for you, I would suggest you take a class or two in computer science to get a feel for it. As a student with experience in computer science (Python, Swift, Java, and C++), I can guarantee even a slight background knowledge will set you apart from other students and job candidates in the best way.
