Why I Chose Advertising

When applying for colleges, the uncertainty of what my future would hold frightened me. Still a little lost on what I wanted to accomplish and do in life, I applied to different colleges for different majors. While most of my friends laughed and called advertising a bit of a joke, I secretly researched the idea in my spare time. Advertising to me means more than just social media. It is the connection between a business and a consumer. What people see first before even knowing anything about a brand. In my junior year of high school, I was the Public Relations Officer for Interact Club, a worldwide community service club. By posting reminders and information on meetings and events happening in our community, I made people aware of what was going on. Advertising needs creativity in forming catchy slogans to displays in magazines that catch people’s eyes. The importance is what you remember. I chose to advertise because it's what a consumer remembers. The work you put in is seen by someone, and they can instantly reflect upon it. This seems to lead to instant gratification for me.

Currently, the roles of advertising majors are so diverse that I can find my interests through any part. Another reason why I chose advertising is that I liked digital marketing. Social media, while not always seen in a positive light, is very important. In the current world, we use social media platforms for everything. From entertainment to information to look at trends, the amount of time we spend on social media platforms is groundbreaking. Being in advertising means you need to evaluate consumer behavior and research what is currently happening and trending, what responses people give to different things, and how to make it positive while getting the least amount of negative feedback.

Advertising needs creative minds who think outside the box, and no two companies you work for will ever be the same. I chose advertising because of its versatility and uses of psychology, art, digital space, social media, and data.
