What Excites Me About Advertising

Jack Van Patten

As time goes on, our society is constantly evolving at an incredible pace. It is advertiser’s responsibility to constantly evolve and adapt to their environment. It was not that long ago that the majority of advertising was in newspapers, magazines, and on the radio. As technology and society progressed those advertising mediums took the back burner to television commercials, digital ads, and social media. However, advertising is far from done evolving, and our generation of advertisers will be part of that evolution.

Advertising began as a way to get people to buy products and services, but today advertising can be so much more. Today, advertising is more about telling stories and making connections with your audience. Advertisers today can also make a more personal connection to their audience thanks to the Internet and social media. They can address real-world issues and controversies as well.

For example, some of the advertisements that aired during this year’s Super Bowl focused on important controversial issues. Many ads talked about real world issues like immigration and equal pay for men and women. Advertisements like these are becoming more important now than ever before because of how divided our society is. People everywhere are looking for answers on what to think and who to believe, and advertising has the power to be the voice that helps inform the public. While everyone is worried about fake news and lying politicians, advertising could have a huge influence on a public that is looking for a dependable voice to follow.

Possibilities like this are what really excite me about getting into advertising. Advertising is constantly changing and evolving field with endless possibilities. Millions of people see advertisements every single day and the influence those advertisements could have on people is astounding. It will be very interesting to see what the next stage in the evolution of advertising will look like, and what impact it could have on society.
